Stuart Hall Grades 5–8
The Grades 5–8 program guide boys by nurturing their capacity for self-reliance, self-advocacy and self-discipline in an environment that values equally the development of mind, heart and body. Adolescence is a time of growth, curiosity and new challenges, and our curriculum combines a continued focus on foundational principles with the expectation that students pursue their unique interests in independently conceived projects. Our extracurricular programs provide opportunities for learning outside of the curriculum, and boys develop a balance between academics, athletics and the arts.
Our advisory program is a central component to the Grades 5–8 students’ success. We assign each student a carefully chosen faculty member to help guide his academic career and personal development during the Middle Form years. The advisory program provides boys with personalized assistance, a forum to share their ideas and experiences, and an authentic opportunity to learn from their peers.
We believe that in these transitional years a student hones his ability to determine both the path and the steps needed to achieve his goals and work to his highest academic and human potential. We are guided by Janet Erskine Stuart’s statement that “our education is not meant to turn the children out small and finished, but seriously begun on a wide basis.” To this end, we invite students to define their being in all its dimensions, in the absence of a prescribed expectation of boyhood. Stuart Hall boys are thinkers and dreamers, athletes and non-athletes, poets and readers, performers and critics, activists and diplomats.
