Convent Wins Second NCS Volleyball Championship

The top-seeded Cubs defeated No. 2 The Bay School in four sets to stand alone atop the Division 5 bracket.

Convent won its second North Coast Section volleyball championship in school history and second title in the past four years with a 3-1 victory over The Bay School on November 6.

Both teams came out with plenty of fire. In a thrilling opening frame, Convent outlasted the Breakers to take the first set 28-26. Both teams traded points the entire second set, but The Bay School bounced back with a 25-23 win. Convent came out with energy to start the third set, jumping out to a commanding 13-2 lead before the Breakers pulled ahead courtesy of a 16-2 run. Trailing 18-15 out of a timeout, Convent countered with a 6-1 run. From there, it was all Cubs as they closed out the set 25-21.

With the fourth set knotted at 21 and The Herbert Center crowd behind them, Convent found a little wiggle room and clinched the championship with a 25-22 win in the final frame. The Cubs were led by a senior class that includes four-year standouts Jennifer Surjadi and Donnalie Yap, who were key contributors on the 2018 NCS title team as freshmen.

In four NCS matches, Convent lost only two sets and rattled off wins at home against Calistoga (3-0), Berean Christian (3-0) and Drew (3-1) before the finals meeting with The Bay School. Convent’s memorable season (18-6 overall) has included a trip to the BCL West finals where the team lost a tightly contested match to Marin Academy.
