Convent & Stuart Hall Summer Program is pleased to present our schedule of classes for Summer 2008 on Stuart Hall High School Campus. Our three-week co-educatioinal summer program provides a diverse selection of course offerings in order to satisfy many interests and needs. Course offerings cover enrichment classes in English and math to directed intensive study classes in math, chemistry, English, and more. Please see the course descriptions for more information.

Basketball (Stuart Hall High School Students Only) - NEW LISTING! Hide

Head basketball coach, Charlie Johnson, will run a summer basketball camp for Stuart Hall High School students interested in playing basketball. Incoming SHHS students are also welcome to attend. First Ever Summer Rock Camp - NEW LISTING! Hide

Play an instrument? Looking to jam this summer? Sign up for the 1st SSH rock camp! As a 5 - 7 piece band, we'll select songs, rehearse, and get ready for a performance attended by friends and family! Local players Mitch Carp, Bret Arenson, and Arnaz Raj share band insights, develop group and individual skills, and guide the band toward its potential. More than anything, it'll be a lot of fun!!

WHEN: June 16 - July 11, M - F, 1:00 - 4:00 pm
WHERE: Columbus Room Stage, SHHS, Pine and Octavia
WHO: All aspiring musicians, boys and girls, encouraged to apply! (Singers, guitarists, bass players, drummers, keyboards or percussion, horns...).
PREREQUISITES: You should have at least one year of experience on your instrument. A short audition, to assess basic skills, will be arranged.
COST: $650.00 - indicate your interest in this class on the application forms.

Summer Sports Camps - NEW LISTING! Hide

Two sports camps will be offered this summer that are not in the published brochure. Separate applications are available under "Downloadable Forms." Soccer - a two week camp beginning on Monday, June 30 and ending on Friday, July 11. It will run from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Beach Chalet soccer field. Coaches are Matthew Woodard and Damon Uriarte, teachers on the Stuart Hall High School faculty.
Baseball/Softball - a one week camp beginning on Monday, July 7 and ending on Friday, July 11. It will run from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Kimball Park (Steiner & Geary). The coach is John Bertken, Athletic Director at Stuart Hall High School.

Policies & Information Hide

Fees:
• There is no registration fee but a $100.00 non-refundable deposit is required with the application. Final payment is due by Friday, May 30, 2008. The deposit is non-refundable even if a student does not attend classes. Please consider this before registering. If registering after May 30, please pay in full.
• No refunds after Monday, June 9, 2008.
• Friday, July 4, 2008 will be a school holiday. No classes will be held.

Application Process:
• Fill out the application form and send to the posted address.
• Convent & Stuart Hall summer program reserves the right to cancel or change the time of any course offering for which an insufficient number of students has registered. If this occurs, deposits will be refunded.
NO refunds will be given to students who drop a class after Tuesday, June 10, 2008 for the Driver's Ed I class and after Tuesday, June 17, 2008 for all other classes. Students are asked to consider carefully the classes for which they register.
• Students will be informed prior to the first day of classes of their class placement and schedule.
• Orientation meetings will be conducted for all high school students on the first day of classes. If you have an 8:00 am class, please report to the Columbus Room for the orientation. All other orientations will be done in the classrooms.
• Stuart Hall High School Campus: Summer Program Office hours are 7:45 am. to 4:30 p.m. daily.
• All courses are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Regulations:
• Students attending Convent & Stuart Hall’s Summer Program are expected to follow the school rules. School rules will be reviewed in the Orientation Meeting on the first day of classes.
• Stuart Hall High School campus is a non-smoking campus. Violations may lead to dismissal from summer program.
There is NO on campus parking. Two-hour street parking is available for those who drive. Please be aware of the posted parking restriction signs. No permits can be given for extended parking.
• All students are required to wear appropriate school attire. No tank tops or “short-shorts” will be permitted. If the administration determines that a student’s dress is inappropriate, s/he may be asked to return home to change clothes.

Course Descriptions Hide

English Enrichment
Designed for incoming high school freshmen, this course concentrates on three areas: vocabulary acquisition and fluency; writing; and critical thinking in a comfortable and interactive environment. Students will also read some of the books from the Summer Reading List for Stuart Hall High School.

Math Enrichment
Designed for incoming high school freshmen, this course covers math concepts necessary for ninth graders - algebra skills and applications - in a lively classroom setting.

SAT Verbal Preparation
Students review vocabulary, analogies, and reading comprehension through the use and analysis of actual SAT test questions. Students will also review essay-writing techniques in preparation for the new SAT. This is ideal for developing the necessary verbal skills for SAT success. Includes the SAT Math and Verbal workbook.

SAT Math Preparation
Incorporates the actual SAT test problems into class strategies for successful SAT testing. Students review algebra and geometry concepts and interpret test results. Students will notice a definite score improvement. Includes the SAT Math and Verbal workbook.

Hands-on introduction to statistics (New Offering 2008)
In this class, we will perform activities and simple experiments to explore statistics, how they are measured and calculated. We will also use various technologies to assist us including Fathom statistics software and TI-83 calculators. (Students should have a TI-83 or higher calculator for the course.) Topics will include descriptive statistics (mean, median, mode, quartiles, ranges, standard deviation, etc.), probability, and inferential statistics (t-test and chi square tests, maybe more).

Driver’s Education I (one week, June 9-13)
This one-week intensive class allows a quick and fun way to complete the DMV’s 30 hours of required instruction. This course is designed as a prerequisite to driver training. Topics include driving skills, defensive driving, the California Vehicle Code. It is strongly recommended that all students make an appointment with their local DMV to take the permit test at the completion of the course.

Driver’s Education II (three weeks, June 16-July 3)
Each session is a complete class covering 30 hours of DMV required instruction. This course is designed as a prerequisite to driver training. Topics include driving skills, defensive driving, the California Vehicle Code. It is strongly recommended that all students make an appointment with their local DMV to take the permit test at the completion of the course. This may require the appointment one month before completing the in-class instruction

Driver’s Education III (one week, July 7-11)
This one-week intensive class allows a quick and fun way to complete DMV’s 30 hours of required instruction. This course is designed as a prerequisite to driver training. Topics include driving skills, defensive driving, the California Vehicle Code. It is strongly recommended that all students make an appointment with their local DMV to take the permit test at the completion of the course.

College Applications Seminar/Workshop (two hour class)

This class is open to incoming seniors. For students who take this class, the majority of the college admissions work will be finished. There will still be some details to complete in the fall, and each student will have an individualized college plan. The class covers the following topics:

* Write the first draft of the college essay
* Develop college resumé
* Research colleges
* Develop a college list
* College interview skills
* Discuss UC and CSU campuses and begin filling out the application
* Complete the Common Application
* Financial Aid and Scholarships

Independent Study: English
This class is designed to meet the particular needs of the student by a qualified high school teacher. This class may be for individual enrichment or to complete academic credit. Course materials and requirements are designed by the teacher and the Academic Dean of the student’s school in order to cover all academic requirements. The student’s Academic Dean must approve course credit.

Intensive Study: Math
This class is available for individual advancement or to complete academic credit. This course covers the necessary content for one semester of either Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, or Calculus. Students work intensely with a qualified high school teacher. All materials and requirements are designed by the teacher and the student’s Academic Dean in order to cover all academic requirements. This is an intensive class with a 5:1 student teacher ratio. The student’s Academic Dean must approve course credit.

Intensive Study: Biology
This class is available for individual advancement or to complete academic credit. Course materials and requirements are designed by the teacher and the student's school in order to cover all academic requirements. This is an intensive class with a 5:1 student teacher ratio. It covers one semester for academic credit. The student’s Academic Dean must approve credit.

Intensive Study: Chemistry
This class is available for individual advancement or to complete academic credit. This course covers the necessary content for one semester of Chemistry. The materials and requirements are designed by a qualified high school teacher and the student’s Academic Dean in order to cover all academic requirements. This is an intensive class with a 5:1 student teacher ratio. The student’s Academic Dean must approve credit.

Intensive Study: Physics
This class is available for individual advancement or to complete academic credit. Course materials and requirements are designed by a qualified high school teacher and the student’s Academic Dean in order to cover all academic requirements. This is an intensive class with a 5:1 student teacher ratio. It covers one semester for academic credit. The student’s Academic Dean must approve credit.

Community Service (Flexible Times) *Offered on a weekly basis*
Choose the weeks you want! During this three-week offering, students explore a variety of volunteer opportunities involving hands-on, direct community service experience with follow-up reflections. Students will satisfy between 10 and 15 hours per week spread over Heart, Support and School hours that are part of the graduation requirement at Stuart Hall High School. This is great opportunity to complete any school’s service requirements.

Keyboarding (grades 7-12)
Students will be given a “hands-on” introduction to the proper use of a computer keyboard. More effective and efficient typing will replace the bad habits learned from the do-it-yourself approach. In our technological society, every student should learn the correct use of the keyboard. Type faster and with fewer mistakes! This class is a must.

Digital Music Recording (grades 7-12)
Do you love music? Have you ever wanted to record your own song? Or even your own CD? Even if you do not play an instrument or sing, you can create your own songs using the program Garage Band for Mac’s. After learning some basic recording concepts such as: looping, multi-track recordings, instrumentation, balance of sounds and sampling, you will be ready to start making your own songs. Once you have created your song or songs, you will burn them onto a CD that you will also have the opportunity to artistically design yourself. By the end of the course, you will have your very own original music to share with your friends, family and even online. You will leave with a good understanding of basic digital music recording and have a lot of fun learning along the way.

Athletic Cross Training (grades 7-12)
Have fun and get fit in this conditioning class. Develop agility and tone muscles, stretch and strengthen as you cross-train your way to a stronger, healthier you! An excellent way to keep in shape for all sports.

Digital Photography (grades 7-12)

Dedicated to using the basics and creative elements of a digital camera, this hands-on and interactive class will help students learn the basics and importance of photography. Students will also learn to scan and digitally enhance antique family photos in creative ways, learn in-camera techniques to make beautiful lighting when photographing friends and family.

Art Portfolio (grades 7-12)
Improve your skills in various art mediums: still life, figure drawing, painting, perspective, etc. We will focus on 2D technical skills learning to portray light/shadows, gauge proportion/perspective, evaluate color/tone, draw the human figure, etc. No previous drawing skills required.

Fencing (grades 7-12)
San Francisco Fencers’ Club will provide beginning and intermediate level instruction in the blade techniques of attack, riposte, parries and disengage. Student will learn and continue to strengthen their fencing positions: en garde, advance, retreat and lunge. SFFC will emphasize accurate fencing positions, footwork movement, balance and coordination. The beginners will gain new skills and confidence in meeting fencing opponents. Intermediate level students will be ready for competitions. This class is open to both beginner and intermediate level fencers. The students need to wear athletic shoes, comfortable clothing for movement, and long pants. All equipment provided by San Francisco Fencers’ Club. For sanitary reasons, it is recommended that fencers buy their own glove. Music Rock Camp (1:00-4:00 pm)
