Convent & Stuart Hall Summer Program is pleased to offer a co-educational Summer Program for students entering the 7th and 8th grades on Stuart Hall High School Campus. Our four-week program offers a selection of academic and enrichment classes. Our faculty for the Summer Program is comprised primarily of our own year-round educators. We also have teachers from Bay Area independent, parochial and public schools. This experienced staff will create a welcoming and stimulating environment for all students.

First Ever Summer Rock Camp - NEW LISTING! Hide

As a 5 - 7 piece band, we'll select songs, rehearse, and get ready for a performance attended by friends and family! Local players Mitch Carp, Bret Arenson, and Arnaz Raj share band insights, develop group and individual skills, and guide the band toward its potential. More than anything, it'll be a lot of fun!!

WHEN: June 16 - July 11, M - F, 1:00 - 4:00 pm
WHERE: Columbus Room Stage, SHHS, Pine and Octavia
WHO: All aspiring musicians, boys and girls, encouraged to apply! (Singers, guitarists, bass players, drummers, keyboards or percussion, horns...).
PREREQUISITES: You should have at least one year of experience on your instrument. A short audition, to assess basic skills, will be arranged.

Summer Sports Camps - NEW LISTING! Hide

Two sports camps will be offered this summer that are not in the published brochure. Separate applications are available under "Downloadable Forms." Soccer - a two week camp beginning on Monday, June 30 and ending on Friday, July 11. It will run from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Beach Chalet soccer field. Coaches are Matthew Woodard and Damon Uriarte, teachers on the Stuart Hall High School faculty.
Baseball/Softball - a one week camp beginning on Monday, July 7 and ending on Friday, July 11. It will run from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Kimball Park (Steiner & Geary). The coach is John Bertken, Athletic Director at Stuart Hall High School.

Classes are coeducational and designed for children entering the 7th and 8th grades. Both academic and enrichment classes are offered with no formal assessment. Faculty may be subject to change without notice.

Class Selection Process:
• Morning Classes: 9:00-11:50 am. Choose THREE 50-minute classes from the class offerings
• Afternoon Classes: 12:45 pm - 4 pm (Lunch time will be supervised for students staying in the afternoon). Choose TWO 90-minute classes from the class offerings.

Regulations:
• Students attending Stuart Hall’s Summer School are expected to follow the school rules. School rules will be reviewed in the Orientation Meeting on the first day of classes.
• All students are required to wear appropriate school attire. No tank tops or “short-shorts” will be permitted. If the administration determines that a student’s dress is inappropriate, a parent or guardian will be contacted, and s/he may be asked to return home to change clothes.
• During the summer, students are expected to behave in respectful and appropriate ways at all times. Parents will be contacted if inappropriate behavior occurs. Failure to comply may result in dismissal from program after notification of parents.

Enrollment:

Enrollment is limited to approximately 15 –20 students per class. Early enrollment is recommended as many classes fill quickly. Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. If a class is full, students will be enrolled in an alternate choice. Every effort is made to ensure that students receive their first class choices. Classes may be canceled in the event of insufficient enrollment.

Confirmation of classes:
You will receive a confirmation of classes in the mail prior to or during the first week of June. If a class is canceled you will be notified. The order of classes may change depending upon scheduling needs and will be confirmed again at registration. This means that the times of classes might change. Enrollment is open until a class is full or canceled.

Students The student population during summer consists of current students, students from other Bay Area schools and various parts of the US and students from abroad.

Attendance is taken daily. If your child will be absent or late, please notify the Summer Office at (415) 345-5811 (main desk) or (415) 345-5817 (director). Students are required to sign in and sign out at the front desk. Students are not permitted to leave the school campus during the school day.

Extended Care:
There is NO extended care for 7th and 8th grades.

Key dates:
• May 30 ALL Program fees due. Please note that after May 30, payment in full is required.
• June 9 Last day for refunds (less the non-refundable deposit fee of $100.00. This fee will not be refunded even if a registered student does not attend the program.)
• Classes: Monday, June 16 –July 11, 2008

Snacks and lunch:
Supervised lunch hour is available only to students enrolled in both morning and afternoon classes. Please send nutritious snacks and lunch with your child daily. There is no food service on campus and students may not leave to buy food at any time. No exceptions. Please notify the Summer Office by phone if your child has severe food allergies or issues at (415) 345-5817.

Traffic information and safety:
The safety of each child is extremely important to us. There is a designated white zone in front of the school. Please follow traffic directives and DO NOT PARK OR LEAVE YOUR CAR IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL AT ANY TIME. There is no double or triple parking allowed. If you wish to walk your child in, please park legally in the neighborhood.

First Day of Class:
All students will assemble in the Columbus Room for registration at 9:00 am unless already on campus for class. Students will receive a schedule and general announcements will be made. Students will be escorted to their first period class by their teacher or by a summer assistant. This meeting is mandatory for all students. Parents are welcome to attend.

Daily Arrival:
• Please drop off your child in front of the School on Octavia Street using the white zone.
• All students enter through the main doors and not the gate.
• Upon entering, students must sign in at the front desk.
• If students arrive early, they may wait in the courtyard or the Columbus Room. Please DO NOT drop your child off before 8:45 am.
• Early Arrivals: If a student consistently arrives before 8:45 am and has no scheduled class, an additional $200.00 fee applies for supervision purposes. If you feel your child will be arriving early, please include the $200.00 fee with the application.

Daily Dismissal:
• Morning dismissal for classes is at Noon.
• Afternoon dismissal for classes is at 4:00 pm.
• Please pick up your child in front of the school on Octavia Street.
• Please remain in your car in the white zone and wait for your child.
• Remind your child to sign out at the front desk.
• NEVER PARK OR LEAVE YOUR CAR IN THE SCHOOL’S WHITE ZONE AT ANY TIME. YOU MAY BE TICKETED AND/OR TOWED.

Early Arrival/Late Pick-up fees:

• If your morning-enrolled child consistently arrives before 8:45 am, s/he may wait in the courtyard or Columbus Room but an additional $200.00 supervision fee will apply.
• If your morning-enrolled child is not picked up by 12:10 pm, he or she will be taken to the front office. A $25.00 supervision fee applies for each occurrence.
• If your afternoon-enrolled child is not picked up by 4:10 pm, he or she will be taken to front office. A $25.00 supervision fee applies for each occurrence.
• If a student has a signed Parent Dismissal Form on record permitting that student to leave school without a parent or guardian present, no additional fee applies.
• Please understand that our staff has multiple responsibilities and supervising students after-hours places an extra burden on them.

Scholarships:

There are no scholarships available for the summer program through the Stuart Hall High School office. You may contact Colleen McGarry, (415) 292 3159 for possible limited scholarships through the Schools of the Sacred Heart Community Outreach Program.

Fees and deposits:

• $650.00 per four weeks session for morning OR afternoon classes only.
• $1,500.00 per four weeks session for BOTH morning AND afternoon classes with Computer Keyboarding.
• A $100 non-refundable deposit will hold your place until May 30, at which time any outstanding balance is due. The deposit will NOT be returned if a registered student withdraws prior to or during the school sessions.
• Students enrolled after May 30 MUST pay in full to register for classes.
• No Credit Cards Accepted.
• Checks payable to: Stuart Hall High School Summer Program. Overseas payment can be made with an International Money Order.
• No refunds after June 9.

Morning Class - 50 Minutes Classes: Choose THREE Classes (9:00 - 11:50 AM) Hide

Keyboarding (The only 8:00 am class)
Students will be given a “hands-on” introduction to the proper use of a computer keyboard. More effective and efficient typing will replace the bad habits learned from the do-it-yourself approach. In our technological society every student should learn the correct use of the keyboard. Type faster and with fewer mistakes! This class is a must.

Algebra Enrichment
Review the concepts of pre-algebra and continue on to topics covered in a standard Algebra class including: exponent laws, variables, linear equations and graphing. This class will benefit any student entering algebra in the fall or students who have completed algebra and are in need of review.

SSAT Prep – Verbal
In this class students create hundreds of index cards and word lists and students learn test-taking skills. There is occasional homework and many practice sessions to get middle school students ready for the SAT. Skills and techniques are practiced consistently. We also test our skills through playing word games and practice tests.

SSAT Prep – Math
Be prepared! We’ll cover some of the arithmetic, basic algebra, and geometry that is part of the exam, as well as “Mathematical Concept” questions. Learn general test-taking strategies and approaches to SSAT Quantitative sections.

Writing Mechanics
You can be a better writer! Work on your basic writing skills in a relaxed and creative environment. Discover the writer inside while working on some of the mechanics of writing. Focus on development of vocabulary, sentence structure, parts of speech, spelling and grammar. Be a fabulous writer with the right tools!

Guided Summer Reading
Jump-start your summer reading list! Learn how to read closely and analyze texts for plots and themes, while tracing character development and the arc of the story. Recognize and interpret metaphors, similes and creative use of language. Develop thematic understanding and reading strategies that will last beyond your summer reading!

Study Skills & Research
Learn basic concepts of organization, time management and strategies to help develop a successful academic career! Learn how to manage your time, take more efficient notes and learn helpful test taking tricks. A must for preparing for high school.

Matter in Motion
Explore the world of physical science and gain understanding about motion, force and measurement in this new class in our brand new science lab! Engage in the world around you and extend your knowledge of moving objects that change place over time. Study the concepts of force and kinetics, simple machines, and even the characteristics of waves. A hands- on lab science class!

Speech & Debate
In this class, students learn and practice the many types of speeches and the rules of debate. They write everyday and create timed speeches. We spend the first days coming up with topics and then we learn the different types of Speech. Every student will give at least 3 speeches. Then we move on to debate, one on one and then breaking the class into two parts. Speech is a very important skill in high school and beyond.

Get A Move On!
Get some exercise and take a break from your morning academic classes. Explore various athletic activities learning coordination and cooperation. Badminton, netball, hockey, soccer, T-ball and basketball are some of the sports we’ll sample. The focus is on building skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The class will take place in SHHS Gym as well as outdoors.

Strategic Games
Join the brain busting fun and play all sorts of games! Learn how to strategize and design and play mind-bending games! Active outdoor games and indoor strategic games will be played offering the opportunity for mathematical and logical thinking and even some exercise. Learn approaches to problem solving and then create your own interactive mind bending games to challenge yourself and your friends.

Athletic Cross Training
Have fun and get fit in this action packed conditioning class. Develop agility and tone muscles, stretch and strengthen as you cross-train your way to a stronger, healthier you!

Fencing
San Francisco Fencers’ Club will provide beginning and intermediate level instruction in the blade techniques of attack, riposte, parries and disengage. Student will learn, and continue to strengthen their fencing positions: en garde, advance, retreat and lunge. SFFC will emphasize accurate fencing positions, footwork movement, balance and coordination. The beginners will gain new skills and confidence in meeting fencing opponents. Intermediate level students will be ready for competitions. This class is open to both beginner and intermediate level fencers. The students need to wear athletic shoes, comfortable clothing for movement, and long pants. All equipment provided by San Francisco Fencers’ Club. For sanitary reasons, it is recommended that fencers buy their own glove.

Community Service

Choose the weeks you want! Students explore a variety of volunteer opportunities involving hands-on, direct community service experience with follow-up reflections. This is great opportunity to complete service requirements. Will take place in the late morning and afternoons.

Art Portfolio
Improve your skills in various art mediums: still life, figure drawing, painting, perspective, etc. We will focus on 2D technical skills learning to portray light/shadows, gauge proportion/perspective, evaluate color/tone, draw the human figure, etc. No previous drawing skills required.

Digital Music Recording
Do you love music? Have you ever wanted to record your own song? Or even your own CD? Even if you do not play an instrument or sing you can create your own songs using the program Garage Band for Mac’s. After learning some basic recording concepts such as: looping, multi-track recordings, instrumentation, balance of sounds and sampling, you will be ready to start making your own songs. Once you have created your song or songs you will burn them onto a CD that you will also have the opportunity to artistically design yourself. By the end of the course you will have your very own original music to share with your friends, family and even online. You will leave with a good understanding of basic digital music recording and have a lot of fun learning along the way.

Digital Art Photography
Dedicated to using the basics and creative elements of a digital camera, this hands-on and interactive class will help students learn the basics and importance of photography. Students will also learn to scan and digitally enhance antique family photos in creative ways, learn in-camera techniques to make beautiful lighting when photographing fiends and family. Tennis
Enjoy learning with other students the skills set necessary to play great tennis. This class will take place on Stuart Hall High School campus and Lafayette Park – two blocks north. Students will learn how to handle the racket, service the ball, forearm and backhand swinging maneuvers as well as the rules of the game for playing singles and doubles. Promises to be lot of fun and great exercise.
