Student Government

In keeping with the Goals of the Schools of the Sacred Heart, student government is an important element at Stuart Hall.  Each year in the late spring, rising 8th grade boys interested in serving put themselves forward in candidacy for Commissioner General.  They prepare their speeches and deliver them to the entire student body.  Afterwards, the new Commissioner General and Assistant Commissioner General are elected by the rising 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes.  The third 8th grade officer, Commissioner for Religious Affairs, is appointed by a faculty committee which conducts interviews of each boy wishing to fill that role.  These three officers are incredibly important to student council and to the entire school community because they stand as representatives of and role models for each boy in our school.  In early Fall, the rest of the student council comes together as boys run for class representative within each section, grades 4 through 8.  After taking their oath of office before the entire community in October, these young men are ready to begin the task of coordinating events for their constituents (Pumpkin Carving Contest, Door Decorating at Christmas, Spirit Week, among many others), bringing concerns of the students to the administration's attention, and modeling the behaviour of the Stuart Hall boy through his commitment to the five Goals.  Meetings take place on Wednesday mornings at 7:30, and are moderated by Mary Blum, faculty advisor to student council.  In 2006-2007, Stuart Hall and Convent Elementary got their student governments together to raise money for Heiffer International, a non-profit organization which provides livestock to people in need throughout the world.  Encouraged by their success, this year's officers have already decided to engage our student council in social outreach, this time within San Francisco.  By stepping forward to lead by example and deed, these young men are indeed fulfilling the Goals of the schools in general, and the hopes of Stuart Hall in particular.
