OBJECTIVE

The students will:
  • Learn to recognize the letters of the alphabet (upper/lower case).
  • Learn to produce the phonic sound associated with each letter.
  • Learn to form both upper and lower case letters following the D'Nealian method.
  • Listen to oral reading passages, synthesize the information, and make inferences.
  • Present information orally in a clear manner.
  • Acquire an awareness of the phonemes in words.
  • Become familiar with the convention of a sentence.
  • Create simple stories using phonetic spelling.
  • Successfully read individual writing aloud.
  • Become familiar with recognizing and using punctuation (period) and capitalization.
  • Read a basic sight word vocabulary list and practice those sight words using pre-decodable books.
  • Develop the confidence necessary to participate in reading and writing activities.
  • Gain exposure to a variety of literature including the works of specific authors.
  • Develop and write simple stories using a story map.

The students will:

  • Recognize ordinal numbers and placement terminology.

GRADING POLICY

Instructors do not evaluate students on individual skills. Projects are planned carefully to integrate the work in the lab with the classroom curriculum. Any special comments are reflected in the instructor's communication with parents.
