PROGRAM OF STUDY

The Convent educational program is presented in two divisions: lower form (grades K-4) and middle form (5-8), each with its own dean to address all stages of growth and learning. The curriculum is collaboratively planned, written, and articulated across the grades.

Lower Form

Lower form emphasizes an integrated approach to learning, often through the use of themes. The core curriculum of literature, language arts, social studies, math, and science is designed to overlap and intertwine, equipping students with both the content and skills essential for future learning. An appreciation of literature and poetry, beginning in kindergarten with selective readings and creative writing, is fostered throughout the elementary years. In mathematics, we use the program developed by the University of Chicago called Everyday Math.  The scientific method shapes hands-on experiments at all levels. Foreign language instruction in French and Spanish starts in grade 3, and Latin is added in grade 6.  In grades 4-6, students are taught by two co-teachers, providing the needed transition between the homeroom structure of K-3 and the departmentalized approach of grades 7 and 8.

Middle Form

The middle form core curriculum builds on knowledge gained in lower form, moving students into increasingly comprehensive and rigorous academic study.  Writing, both creative and expository, is required in all subject areas. Convent students are at home in a science lab and experienced in the scientific method of discovery.  They all complete Algebra I in grade 8.  In their study of history, they travel from the ancient world to contemporary society.  Throughout their studies, Convent girls become progressively proficient with technology and resourceful and confident in their academic abilities. In addition to the strong core curriculum, a variety of subjects taught by specialty faculty – including foreign languages, religion, computer, art, drama, music, and physical education – give both breadth and depth to the program.
